This is my 12th #KATEOVATION and I'm LOVING it! This house was built in 1965 as a ranch - and a previous owner added a sweet 70's style apartment over the garage. So we have a stellar location a stone's throw from Fernhill Park, really fun finishes and some stripes to dial up the fun feeling.
I was told that blue was the favorite color of the previous owner - and she had beautiful blue countertops in the kitchen and bathroom, blue exterior paint and bits of knick knacks left about. I decided to lean into the blue in honor of Anita. So starting with the blue bathroom countertops, I ordered wallpaper samples to create a theme. The one I found from Spoonflower captivated me - and so I then used that to source tile, grout and accessories.
The kitchen counters were very low - I was told that Anita was even more petite than me! So we raised them, removed the uppers and kept a portion of the bar to keep that pretty blue. I created a custom palette from Modwalls for the backsplash - love the retro look in a fresh palette.
There was no way I was going to paint or remove the wood paneling in the ADU: it's just so cool and brings a sexy texture to the space. I love that this area can be integrated into the main home - or used as a guest suite or STR. I wanted to bring in the same deep blue for continuity. Found fantastic vinyl from my European supplier that looks so great with the deep wood tone. Cork seemed like the best choice for the main living area.
The pass-thru garage seems like a great opportunity to create a functional indoor/outdoor space! So I got a new full glass door and a new garage door to allow more light. We painted the space so it feels more like an extension of the patio. So fun for game nights, BBQ's or a ping pong table would be amazing.
